First Challenge - Discussion Thread

Hey Yali!

As you all know, we have our first challenge today. Hopefully everyone has done the practice challenge.

So far we know that the challenge will be some sort of puzzle, similar to the practice one.

In order to be as prepared as possible, everyone should share some ideas/ strategies of anything pertaining to the challenge.

I think this is a great idea! I did the practice.. I'm just unsure as to how they will make it a group challenge.

I think if it's a puzzle, we can all grab a row or section of it and work on it in our own threads and then add to the result in the challenge thread? Something like that maybe?

I think either:
A. There will be multiple puzzles.
or
B. The puzzle will be bigger and take longer.

If there's multiple puzzles, we should have different groups working on each one together.
If it's one big puzzle, we should split it into sections like Dale says and then have different groups work on each section.

The multiple puzzle make sense.

Though, if it's one big puzzle, while seeming easier in theory, the splitting is also going to take some coordinating.

Do you think they'll separate the larger puzzle? Otherwise I'm not sure how we would portion it out.

That's very true.
If we were doing that, we would have to figure it out before hand.
If they all work on it together, they might have a lot of people wasting time doing the same thing.
Although if we split it up and don't coordinate, we could lose a lot of time.
I think it all will come down to what everyone is comfortable with, and how effectively we can work together, since I can see pros and cons to both strategies.

I just dont understand how one big puzzle would work. We would have to somehow post it in multiple posts? Either way if that's what happens then we should appoint our leader to portion it out for us :) (sorry Jac)

If it's multiple puzzles, obviously the solution will be, as said above, to have different groups working on each puzzle. Though I think each should be solo as trying to work together through one post could be confusing and post editing may not be allowed. If it's one big puzzle, I suggest someone rearranges the puzzle in a software first, posts it here with labels of which piece is which, and then someone can already have the reply box ready with the puzzle underneath in the thread history, and put each IMG tag in the right place.

I guess we will see tonight. If it's one big puzzle maybe they'll make us pick two or three people to work on it only. That would make more sense. If it's a bunch of smaller puzzles then we can all tackle a puzzle.

I agree we should let Jac point us in the right direction :P

hey guys.
I agree that if it is multiple puzzles, we should get in groups and complete the puzzles in groups to be efficient in time.
If it is a large puzzle, I believe it's best if we have one person who can unscramble the puzzle on photoshotp/GIMP and post the picture for us to see. Once we have that, I do believe to prevent a clusterfuck that only 2-3 people should attempt the puzzle.

Now is anyone efficient in unscrambling on a software? And who is confident in solving puzzles?

I can't help with any kind of software programs or puzzles

Call me if you need a guy to physically carry your computer for you

I can try to unscramble on software, I'm pretty good with puzzles. But we may need a backup just in case?

I'm sure you all got this and may already have done it, but one really grea thing, from the full editor on any given post, is the preview option. Each step I previewed just to ensure that I was headed in the right direction and prevented me from ever having to deal with the headache of backtracking through the giant and jumbled code/urls.

what i did with the practice puzzle - i printscreened, labelled each piece with its number (piece 1, piece 2, etc.) rearranged them into their order, splitscreened, quoted the puzzle in the full editor, and rearranged the URLS i got from quoting the original post into the order of the numbers i labelled on my software. complicated, but it worked quickly and efficiently.

When doing the practice I just print screened pasted in paint and then rearrange and split screened to copy from the original. Was pretty easy, maybe I'm good at puzzles? I don't really know ... but I am excited!

That sounds like a really awesome strategy Missy! Probably the fastest way to get it done.
Plus like Val said, if we can preview the post, we wont waste any time submitting a wrong answer.

Anyone know if using a software to solve it is against the rules??

I really don't know.

Also, guys heads up, the challenge may not include a puzzle. Idk why, but I'm just having this gut feel about it. haha

@Dale, I think Missy is just using it organizationally. I think they don't want you entering in a fully finished puzzle, as in they want each of those picture files to remain separate items.

@Reed, you think they're going to be that shady?
